SEPTEMBER 2008 UNITED STATES SUBMARINE VETERANS – GREAT LAKES BASE NEWS & INFORMATION

1. Happy Birthday this month to: Tom Gallagher (10th), Bruce Snyder (11th), John Surman & Ed Kraft (13th), Tim Deneen (23rd), John Neiding (28th), and Sherry Thompson on the 29th.

2. Summer Picnic/Pig Roast. Special thanks go to the following people for their help in making this year’s event a great success: Larry Heckelsmiller, Gary Walters, Glen Gerard (Magician), Ron Grundy, Joe Dorcey, Candice Rothering & Greg’s Catering in Franksville.

3. National Officer Elections. Thanks to all members that took time to vote electronically or by mail. Our online voting participation was 25%.

4. Duty Cooks. This month John Surman will be in the galley with a “Surprise” and next month we have Steve & Sherry Thompson with their world famous “Man Chili.” We still need volunteers for November & December.

5. Submarine Float Update from the Ship Superintendent, Gary Walters. Here are the latest pictures of the submarine project. The crew is doing great. The trailer is in the final planning stages and by the end of this week we will know just how much we must spend. At the next meeting, the entire construction crew will give a complete report. We may a few more funds (I am still working on that each day) and for sure we are going to need more help in the preparation of the hull prior to fiber glassing. We are working 4 days (M-Th) a week and after Labor Day, we may be able to work on Saturdays.
